Nicki Minaj recently opened up to Billboard as part of their end of the year cover story, where she talked extensively about her relationship with Meek Mill (they live together now), her new ABC sitcom, Black Lives Matter and music of course..
While Meek did give Nicki a massive diamond ring, it’s not an engagement ring.. Nicki said it was just a birthday gift. The two are not currently engaged cause Meek promised to give her 3 rings before they got married.. And Nicki plans on making sure Meek fulfills his promise.
It’s no secret that Beyonce has taken a liking to Nicki.. So when it comes to the struggles of being in a high profile relationship, it’s no surprise they Bey & Jay gave Meek and Nicki some powerful words and some much needed relationship advice..
“They were so giving with advice. I love them so much. It was just a beautiful conversation to have with people we love and we look up to as a couple. They’re so strong,” Nicki said.
While many may think of Nicki is out of touch, the rapper is very much in touch with the reality that her fellow american black citizens face in the penal justice system.
“What it has become is not a war on drugs. It has become slavery. Or something crazier. When I see how many people are in jail, I feel like, “Wait a minute. Our government is aware of these statistics and thinks it’s OK?” The sentences are inhumane. I love the president for trying to be a voice for people who no other person has ever tried to be a voice for” Nicki said.
Though Nicki and Meek’s relationship appears to be stronger than ever right now, she said that he still doesn’t let her hear his music before it drops. “Right now, he’s about to put out a mixtape, and I haven’t heard it. We laugh about this all the time,” Nicki revealed. That mixtape is presumably Dreamchasers 4, which Meek has been promoting for the past few months.
Interestingly enough, Nicki mentioned in the interview that she’s definitely going to drop another mixtape during her career, though she didn’t give any hints about a release date. “Well, I want to touch a couple of beats that I wasn’t on. I could have bodied a lot of the records that came out in the last year. But the main thing is, I have to set an example for female rappers,” Nicki said.
At one point, an employee of Minaj’s asks her how she came up with one of the rhymes in “Only,” a zinger that spins a naughty punchline out of a reference to the L.A. Clippers’ small forward Lance Stephenson. “I had just finished cooking,” she said. “I always like to season stuff really good before I cook it — I let it soak. ‘Let it soak in, like seasonin’/And tell ’em, tell ’em blow me, Lance Stephenson.’ See? Let it soak in.”
Aside from music, Nicki also touched on her favorite tv show, which just so happens to mine too..
Do you watch a lot of TV?
I watch Investigation Discovery all day. All day. Like, I know everything about law and crime-solving. Everybody that comes to my house, they’re like: “Do you not take it off this channel?” Meek thinks that I’m planning on killing him. We live together now, and every time he wakes up, it’s on. Every time he goes to sleep, it’s on, Nicki told Billboard.
