In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Annette January and Lashuntae Benton were both 19 and students at Southern University. January was on the track and field team while Benton was an athletic trainer. Sadly, both ladies were shot and killed Sunday morning around 2:00 a.m.
According to KSLA.com, police were called to the scene of a shooting at the Cottages Apartments in the 700 block of Ben Hur Drive around 2 a.m. Sunday.
Apparently there was a social gathering that moved into the apartment complex’s parking lot. Shots were fired that resulted in 2 females and one male being shot. The two women, January and Benton, died while the 24 year-old is suspected to survive.
Ray L. Belton, president of the Southern University System released a statement about the death of two of its students.
“It is with deep sadness that the University confirms that two Southern University Baton Rouge female student-athletes were killed early Sunday, April 10, 2016. According to law enforcement, freshman track and field athlete Annette January of Gary, Indiana, and sophomore student athletic trainer Lashuntae Benton of Lake Charles, were killed by gunfire outside of an apartment complex in Baton Rouge near LSU, early this morning. An investigation is ongoing. The University asks for prayers and support for the families at this difficult time.”
Police say they currently have no suspects or motive at this time.
