Last year there was a lot of controversy when San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand during the national anthem in protest against all the police-related killings of Blacks across the country.
While he drew support, he also drew ire from other athletes and put his return to the 49ers in question with the NFL upcoming season.
A growing number of professional athletes are putting their careers and big dollar endorsement deals on the line, including Serena Williams and most recently as this week, at least three World Champion New England Patriots who are refusing to make the annual NFL Champion’s trip to the While House in protest of President Donald Trump.
In the last few days, and most recently as last night, NBA star Steph Curry has spoken out against President Trump, as well as Under Armour, the very company that he has a lucractive shoe deal with.
It’s not a good look for the company, as CNN Money reports that it is struggling financially. On top of that, because of Curry’s statements, social media has launched a #boycottUnderArmour campaign. One person on Twitter, who appears to be a brand strategist said: I have three boys and I’m a runner. Based on your praise of Trump, I will never buy another piece of Under Armor.” #BoycottUnderArmour
