Gifford, Florida – On Sunday, pregnant, 21-year-old Alteria Woods was killed during a S.W.A.T. raid. The father of her child used her body as as shield against flying bullets from the police. Now the family she left behind is grieving over her senseless death.
Woods’ aunt, Arlene Cooper, said it is hard coming to grips with what has happened to her niece.
“I’ve never heard of this before. We don’t know what to do, no closure,” said Arlene Cooper, Alteria’s aunt.
I was in shock,” Cooper said. “She was four months pregnant.”
Hours before a sheriff’s drug raid, Alteria was out with her boyfriend, her cousin said.
They were at the movies, watching “Get Out.” Then they went to the Firefighters’ Indian River County Fair.
Hours later, she lay dead on a bed.
Woods was caught in the crossfire of the shootout, killed by Indian River County Sheriff’s deputies during the raid at a home along 45th Street and 35th Avenue.
