Mother and her girlfriend charged in death of 2-year-old little girl
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS — A mother and her girlfriend have been arrested and charged in connection with the death of a 2-year-old girl.
Police say the child’s mother, Shari Newman, and her live-in girlfriend, Letica Young, have both been charged with capital murder.
The incident happened Saturday night at an apartment on Fairhaven near Datapoint on the Northwest Side. Officers were called to Methodist Children’s Hospital concerning the death of a 2-year-old Saturday. When they arrived, they noticed bruising on the child and called for homicide detectives. The detectives then examined the child and found bruising all over her body and believed it was obvious that some sort of abuse had taken place.
When questioned, Newman and and her girlfriend, Letica Monae Young, told investigators the child fell off of a motorized scooter, which police said was not consistent with the injuries.
The medical examiner determined the child had sustained some very serious injuries and injuries in various states of healing, including a skull fracture and internal injuries consistent with blunt force trauma.
Police say when questioned further, Newman and Young admitted they had concocted the story about the child falling off the scooter. Police said they did not admit to what had happened but acknowledged there was some significant abuse that was consistent with the findings of the medical examiner.
When detectives searched the apartment, they found blood on the walls, depression marks in the wall consistent with someone being pushed into it, as well as blood and clumps of hair.
Police believe there was an ongoing cycle of abuse and said the child was already dead when she was taken to the hospital.
