STOP KONY 2012 FILMMAKER was to be ARRESTED for being NUDE in PUBLIC and supposedly MASTURBATING.

According to police Russell was hospitalized instead on a 5150 psychiatric hold so they can assess his mental state.

The 5150 hold allows authorities to keep Russell for up to 3 days to determine if he represents a threat to either himself or others.

This comes just a week after Jason released his worldwide viral video onto the internet causing him to be an instant celebrity. 

Jason Russell, the mastermind behind the worldwide documentary Kony 2012 video was arrested in San Diego for allegedly being drunk in public and masturbating.

According to TMZ, Russell was taken into custody by San Diego cops and in addition to allegedly masturbating, cops say he vandalized cars.

Lt. Andra Brown said they found Russell masturbating in public, vandalizing cars and possibly under the influence of something.

He was detained at the intersection of Ingraham Street and Riviera Road. Brown said Russell was acting very strange.

According police said they received several calls around 11:30 AM yesterday of reports of a in “various stages of undress.”

Witnesses say that Russell was dancing around wearing “speedo-like underwear” and eventually removed the underwear and began to make sexual gestures.

RUSSELL’S wife speaks out:

Mr Russell’s wife has now spoken out to defend her husband’s ‘irrational’ behaviour – suggesting that it was brought on by the unexpected attention and criticism that his film about the African warlord Joseph Kony generated.

Danica Russell  issued a statement saying her husband: ‘did some irrational things brought on by extreme exhaustion and dehydration.’

‘We thought a few thousand people would see the film, but in less than a week, millions of people around the world saw it,’ she said.

‘While that attention was great for raising awareness about Joseph Kony, it also brought a lot of attention to Jason and, because of how personal the film is, many of the attacks against it were also very personal, and Jason took them very hard.’

Mr Russell, 33, was calm and co-operative when apprehended by police, according to NBC San Diego, but seemed to be under the influence of alcohol.

Danica has denied that her husband has any substance abuse or drinking problems.

Although he was not charged with a crime, officials decided that he should be committed to hospital for medical treatment following the incident.

‘During the evaluation we learned that we probably needed to take care of him,’ a police spokesman said.

‘So officers detained him and transferred him to a local medical facility for further evaluation and treatment.’
