A teen was recently taken off of life support after being unable to do anything other then text message and uncontrollably roll her eyes sarcastically. After months of trying to get her to react to their instructions, her parents had given up hope that the girl would ever live a normal life. So they made the difficult decision to pull the plug. They took her cell phone away from her so that she could have some peace of mind.. Some time to think.. (Did you think that was a real story? Of course you did. Sadly enough it actually describes todays youth.
In a way technology has set us back as a society. Although great strides have been made with the use of technology it has put today’s youth at a great disadvantage. It has rendered the use of brain cells unnecessary.
I can only imagine how it was for my grandmother growing up. Dealing with the racism and prejudice her generation fought so hard against and still persevering through it all, but that’s not what this article is about. I can imagine the man that courted my grandmother having to court her, having to write her letters, communicate effectively and get her parents permission to even take her out on a date. Before they were ever able to go out alone I imagine that he had to prove himself to my great grandmother, grandfather or both to be a worthy suitor for their daughter.
Fast forward to 2012 ……
Now, young men think its acceptable to pull up out front and beep for their “date” to come out. No doors are opened, no chairs pulled out, they call them “shorty”, “ma” or whatever else is in at the moment. To make matters worse most young ladies deem this acceptable. If parents are met it’s after exchanging texts, Facebook or twitter messages.
In addition to sexting pictures and video back and forth. Technology has allowed people (not just young) to jump to the bedroom first then decide what to do with the “relationship” later. It’s dating and mating on steroids. Old flings, high school classmates & miscellaneous people are now allowed instant access to anyone which often results in affairs in the mind which lead to actual affairs in the bedroom, which often leave family, friends, and children devastated in the aftermath. The affair happens first then the family situation is “sorted” out second.
Education was emphasized in my grandmothers day but now a 143 text means I love you and idk and other text short form replaces the true meaning and spelling of the word. You may think its no big deal but alot of people actually can’t spell and are starting to speak in “text” jargon. I don’t know if I’m the only one that sees the path of destruction that technology has created and I actually work on computers everyday.
You used to actually have to use cash to pay your bills so then you knew what was left over, but now you swipe your card for everything from furniture to a coffee often times leaving you with no idea what if anything is left over. Dave Ramsey writes that ”When you pay in cash, you can “feel” the money leaving you. This is not true with credit cards. Flipping a card up on a counter registers nothing emotionally. If you use plastic instead of cash you will spend 12 percent to 18 percent more. This is money you could have saved.”
Video games are actually raising some kids they come home and get first hand experience at killing from Call of Duty or they can steal cars in Grand theft auto for hours and hours at a time. Do you realize Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 3 sold over 5 million copies in the first week? Kids are on video games instead playing outside, reading, doing homework, or having real world interactions. Husbands, fathers, wives, and moms are either online on Facebook, twitter or playing the same video games instead of using that time cultivating relationships with each other or their children.
Mistresses text message wives photos and videos of their husbands exploits.
Video models and women with no other asset than their ass become rich and famous (Kim Kardashian and others). Basketball wives, Real Housewives, Love & hip hop, bad girls club and many other reality shows exhibit the most vile and promiscuous behaviors that are then emulated by other women young and old. And these same shows and society as a whole teach men that this not chivalry and courtship is how to attract a woman. Flash cash, skip go and get the woman of your choice often creating kids that will be raised without the luxury of having both parents as active participants in their lives.
Elementary kids are seen on video doing the most X rated of dances while adults look on like it’s all fun and games. Gang members and hustlers post shootings, pictures of guns, drugs, and money online for the world to see. I can’t be the only one that see the insanity in this.
Technology is a good thing but there are many more examples of it decreasing the value of society. There’s no turning back now but it’s vastly heading down hill I just wonder what my grandmother and people of her generation would think now if she was still here to see it… What would Martin Luther King Jr. & Malcolm X think or would we be too busy online to even notice them?
And on that note I just have to SMH and pray for better days….
